History
In 1977 the original school was built and 65 pupils moved in. At that time Hoyvík was a village and had started to develop into a suburb of Tórshavn. The school was built for about 165 pupils but it soon became evident that much more room was needed. In the beginning of the nineties the number of students had increased so much that it became necessary to build an addition to the school. The same thing happened in the end of the nineties and now our school is one of the biggest ones in The Faroe Islands. Hoyvík is now a part of Tórshavn and the fastest growing area in the islands. In fact a new school will be built in the neighbourhood and shall hopefully be ready in 2007.
Even though we are situated in a fast growing suburb we have some advantages. A few minutes´walk in one direction takes us to the fields and if we take another direction we reach the sea. Buses pass our school every half hour and take us to midtown in about ten minutes.Pupils
Hoyvík School has 20 classes from 1st to 7th grade. There are three parallel classes except 7th grade which has two. This year we have 451 pupils.
After 7th grade our pupils move to a different school to complete 8. – 10. grade.
Staff
1 headmaster
1 assistant headmaster
31 teachers
1 secretary
2 janitors, one of them connected to the sports center
1 nurse
Each teacher is member of one group which is responsible for a certain function. This year these groups are:
* Project group. In charge of a project in which all the pupils are involved
* Cooperation group. In charge of the production of the school paper 3 times this year and working together with a group of parents in regards to improve school/home relations.
* Sports group. In charge of sports/activity days for pupils and staff.
* Grief group. In charge of meeting the needs of pupils and staff in need of support due to loss.
* The school yard group. In charge of further development in the school yard.
Facilities
Due to the fact that additions have been made to the school twice the building is divided into three natural sections.
In the original part we have pupils from the 4th to 6th grade and the service center.
In the first addition we have pupils from the 1st to the 4th grade and all the rooms for the arts and crafts.
In the newest part we have pupils in the 7th grade and the science room.
This summer some major repair work was done in the school and at the same time some needed changes were made to improve the function of the school. Now all the administration is together in the center of the building and the teachers´ facilities have been improved.
In 2001 a sports center was built next to the school. We use the facilities every day.
In 2003 the work on a new and good school yard was started. The ground work is completed and our pupils now have an exciting and beautiful playground. It is not finished yet and probably never will be “finished”. It is a project that will change and improve every year.
School profile
These sentences are hanging in each classroom and everywhere in the school. Furthermore they are printed in a folder that is given to the parents every year. Six simple sentences that we have made as a basis for our school
* In Hoyvík School there is cooperation between home and school
* We meet on time and prepared
* We respect each other and take good care of the school and the environment
* We are hard working, polite and well mannered.
* We learn every day
* In the school there is always peace to work
This school year the teachers will discuss which basic values we should build our school on. This will be done in cooperation with the school board, parents and pupils.
School development
Our school development project started 2003/2004. We asked this question:
How do we want our school to be in 2006? With regards to pedagogical work and the surroundings we offer to pupils and staff.
The result can be summarized into these headlines:
Better learning for everybody. Facilities/methods/projects/...
Cooperation. Teachers/pupils/across classes/across subjects/...
Organization. Dividing into sections “the small school within the big school”/autonomous teams/...
Service. Excellent service center/expert teachers/...
Growth and well-being for everybody.
Beginning education. In-schooling.
Each group met several times during last school year. In June each group presented its result and we had some good discussions.
The parents, that is two representatives from each class, met with the teachers and school board one evening to discuss “the good school”. The result has been taken into consideration as well.
The consequences this school year:
We have organized ourselves differently. Teachers are working in teams that cover pupils from the same year. The schedules are created with cooperation in mind. And the teachers have got time to plan and discuss.
The service center is in progress and doing well.
The development 2004/2005
We continue along the same lines. But this year it is important to focus and limit ourselves.
The natural subjects to focus on this year are the service center and cooperation in teams.
Now that we have them, how do we use them best.
